Storage Solutions: The Basics

The most basic and important component of any storage solution is “The Load”. What is being stored and what the characteristics are set the stage for the decisions on how the loads are stored, whether it be in traditional selective rack or an automated AS/RS system.

While this would seem to be the obvious starting point it is sometimes over shadowed by the desire for a certain type of solution. Assumptions and inaccurate information about the loads to be stored will lead to ineffective and costly solutions for both the seller and buyer.

Identifying the height, width, depth and weight of the load are the basic questions to be answered. Typically, there will be more than one load type so there will be multiple characteristics to consider when planning a solution. Other information such as what kind of pallet(s) are being used, is there any load overhang on the pallet and the stability of the load all have to be considered as part of the solution. How many of each type of load and what type of handling equipment is being used are also factors which will influence the type of solution that will work the best.

The load characteristics will ultimately determine the height and density of the storage system as well as the material required for the structure. While selective rack is relatively flexible to different load characteristics this is not the case with drive-in, push back and flow rack where the load must be defined as accurately as possible to ensure proper operation of the system.

The best first step to any storage solution is an accurate definition and appraisal of the loads to be stored. Doing this will help prevent misunderstandings in the design and implementation process and lead to a more efficient operating storage system.
